What's that smell? | June Newsletter

Where are the smelling salts? Also known as ammonia inhalants or spirit of hartshorn, smelling salts are chemical compounds used for arousing consciousness. The usual active ingredient is ammonium carbonate, a colorless-to-white crystalline solid. Modern smelling salts also may contain products to perfume the ammonia, such as lavender or eucalyptus oil.

Historically, smelling salts were used on people feeling faint or who had fainted. They also are used by athletes, particularly boxers who have been dazed or knocked unconscious to restore consciousness and mental alertness. These have now been banned in most bouts. They also are used as stimulants in competitions, such as powerlifting, strong man, football and ice hockey.

Word of the Month: Nosegay – a small flower bouquet, typically given as a gift. The term nosegay arose in fifteenth-century Middle English as a combination of nose and gay (the latter then meaning "ornament"). So a nosegay was an ornament that appeals to the nose or nostril.

Remember Smell-O-Vision? Ardent moviegoers may know that Smell-O-Vision was a system that released odor during a movie so the viewer could "smell" what was happening in the film. The technique was created by Hans Laube and made its only appearance in the 1960 film Scent of Mystery, produced by Mike Todd, Jr., son of film producer Mike Todd (Liz Taylor's hubby). The process injected 30 odors into a movie theater's seats when triggered by the film's soundtrack. Yep, the '60s were weird!

The use of scents with film dates back to 1906 -- before the introduction of sound -- when Samuel Roxy Rothafel of the Family Theatre in Forest City, Pennsylvania, placed a wad of cotton wool that had been soaked in rose oil in front of an electric fan during a newsreel about the Rose Bowl Game

In 1929, during the showing of The Broadway Melody, a New York City theater sprayed perfume from the ceiling. Arthur Mayer installed an in-theater smell system in Paramount's Rialto Theater on Broadway in 1933, which delivered odors during a film. However, it would take over an hour to clear the scents from the theater, and some smells would linger for days afterward. Further attempts with releasing scents timed to key points in a film happened at a Detroit, Michigan theater with The Sea Hawk and Boom Town.
